Is the City of Los Angeles, really confusing? There are so many neighborhoods, areas and parts of town that residents will talk about and it is almost impossible to know them all. As local real estate agents and LA native, we've been to most and found a source that helped us explain them to locals and future residents. Let's break it down!
There are 88 established Cities with their own elected officials like Whittier, Burbank, Beverly Hills and Hawthorne.
Next up, are the 187 Unincorporated Areas that utilize the Board of Supervisors & services from LA County (ex. Marina Del Rey, Newhall, Baldwin Hills, and Hacienda Heights).
The largest group is made up of the 234 self-designated Neighborhoods like Echo Park & Woodland Hills and even lesser knowns of Picfair Village, Frogtown and Toluca Woods. Since these are self-designated some of these don't even have a sign!
The last few are made up of the 29 Historic Districts & 34 HPOZs (Carthay Circle, Alvarado Terrace, & Highland Park/Garvanza).
The grand total is 572 different neighborhoods that make up LA. Some are official and many are not but together they are part of the landscape that makes up Los Angeles!
